Busy Holidays are Our Guides to Simpler Living

Holidays are when our “to do” lists are longer than usual. Ironically, within all that busyness lies our greatest lessons for how to live more simply and easily the rest of the year.

Holidays are when our focus switches from work, work, work to enjoying the true pleasures of life. We pare down our days to the essentials and priorities that refuel us.

We can do this by remaining mindful of and focus on what’s most important about the holidays, what it is that brings us joy.

Family. We travel hundreds or thousands of miles for hugs and shared meals. Visit more often.

Friends. Time with dear friends, our chosen families, makes life particularly sweet. Schedule those coffees together.

Generosity. Our compassion is heightened and we find time and money for those in need. Show up regularly and set monthly recurring contributions.

Playfulness. Sledding, ice skating, board and card games, baking, decorating, ugly sweaters, reading aloud and silly traditions. Block out time to have fun.

Creativity. Our creativity comes out during the holidays, from baking to making ornaments to arranging colorful candles in the menorah. Find your favorite ways to express yourself.

As we say good-bye to our year-end holidays, we can choose to hold onto the essence of what makes these celebrations so precious.

Happy Holidays, with love.
