Seeking Calm Amid Uncertainty

We’re in the middle of great uncertainty, but the truth is much of life is always uncertain.

Believing we’re in complete control of our lives makes us feel secure, but it’s a myth. Weather, natural disasters, other people, illness, accidents, and the economy are out of our hands.

Before you get bummed out, there are action steps you can take that, while not giving you total control, will make you feel that “you got this” regardless of what happens.

PRE-ACTION STEPS:

  • Sit and breathe. Acknowledge your thoughts and fears as they arise. Then go back to your breath. You can’t make a solid plan when your mind is in overdrive and your heart is racing.

  • Eat well, get enough sleep, move your body, spend time outdoors, and talk with friends and family (Zoom counts). Super self-care and love go a long way

ACTION STEPS:

  • Create Plan A. This is your ideal life. If you’re an employee, what steps can you take to keep your job at your current salary and benefits. If you’re a business owner, what steps can you take to adapt and succeed in the rapidly changing environment. Brainstorm and ask for help.

  • Create Plan B. This is your backup plan. For most people, this is about money. Plan for what you’ll do if your salary is cut, your job is cut, or your business is in freefall. Start saving as much money as possible by cutting all discretionary spending. What can you put in place so you’re ready for a major jolt? You may never need Plan B, but you’ll sleep better knowing it’s there.

Remember… you got to where you are through hard work and determination. Giving up has never been your default position.

That hasn’t changed.

You got this.
