Let’s talk about builders.

Those people who design, create, and produce something new.

I’m not talking about building with bricks and mortar. Rather, I’m talking about building a better world, the proverbial “big tent.”

We saw this social building on full display this week.

First, we celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King’s 92nd birthday on Monday. He was one of the great giants of building a more just and peaceful world.

Then, on Wednesday, we watched Kamala Harris, the first Black Asian woman (the trifecta!) get sworn in as Vice President of the United States by the first Latina Supreme Court Justice, Sonia Sotomayor. Two extraordinary women who work daily to build a “more perfect union.”

As if that weren’t enough, just hours later we witnessed Vice President Harris swear in three new Senators: the first Black and the first Jewish Senators from Georgia, and a Hispanic Senator from California. What a sight that was!

All these amazing builders have one major goal in common: their work is about expanding rights and opportunities, not restricting them. They want for everyone what they want for themselves.

Their visions – their building designs – are based on inclusivity. Their big tent infinitely expands so that everyone fits inside.

I know many of you are builders, too. You volunteer. You advocate. You write. You donate. You march. You speak out.
